microsoft auto update xp

Why my computer is not checking microsoft update automatically ?

I have already set-up window updates (thru ‘automatic updates’ in ‘control panel’ ) to deliver updates automatically on my XP, daily at 1 PM, but its not updating automatically nor I happen to see installing update, when I shut down my computer. (My o/s hasn’t got updated since past 1-2 months). Do I need to do some other settings ? I prefer auto updating than manual. Please advice, thanks.
